What is the advantage of a live exam review class

in comparison to a computer based program ?
The NCLEX® -  Examinations are developed and
administered by the National Council of State Boards of
Nursing (NCSBN). These examinations are designed to
assess the knowledge of Nursing School Graduates for
their fitness to practice and to obtain a nursing license to
start working in an entry level nursing position in the United
States. There are currently two different examinations held
for practical nurses (PN) and registered nurses. (RN). For
many years the NCLEX - Examinations have been a major
challenge for Nursing School Graduates for various
reasons. Although the overall nationwide pass rate among
first time NCLEX-RN®-candidates remains on the average
stable within the 80% range since 1997, there are great
differences between the pass rates of individual nursing
programs which vary on average between 45% and 90%.
In order to recent data provided by the NCSBN, repeat
exam takers show on an average a pass rate of only 53%
on their second attempt and 37% on their third attempt.

There are various reasons why this licensing examination
remains a great challenge for Nursing School Graduates
for many years. The main aspect is that these
examinations differ completely from any exam at a nursing
college. The NCLEX-RN® is administered in a computer
adaptive testing (CAT) setting which requires the student
to work in a very different test environment and different
conditions in comparison to a common paper and pencil
test.  Also, the majority of the questions on this
examination does not focus on just one single aspect of
the nursing curriculum but on various clinical and nursing
topics at once.  Therefore, the questions require profound
theoretic knowledge as well as a complex and flexible way
of thinking as it is necessary in daily nursing practice.
However, this exam is manageable but unusual for nursing
graduates because it requires a very different way of
preparation.  The challenge of a successful NCLEX-RN®
exam preparation is to review the nursing curriculum under
exam relevant aspects and to get familiar with the specific
requirements and question style of the NCLEX-RN®
examination.

Due to its unique setting as a computer adaptive testing
the NCLEX-RN®-Examination regularly starts with a
question that targets knowledge which is slightly below
average of the required overall exam knowledge base line.
If the candidate answers this first question correctly then
the computer will automatically pick another more difficult
question. If the candidate answers the question wrong then
the computer automatically chooses a less difficult
question. The minimum amount of questions to be
answered by every candidate is 75 within an allotted time
of 6 hours. Depending on the individual test performance
the candidate will be offered more questions but not
additional testing time to reach the passing score. In any
way the maximum amount of questions will not exceed 265.
Fifteen percent of the overall amount of questions asked
will not be used for the assessment of the exam candidate
since these questions are tested for their use in future
exams. The exam stops automatically either after the first
75 questions or once the allotted time is over or when the
candidate has proven a satisfying or a non satisfying level
of competence.  It causes a lot of discomfort for the
candidates during the test if the system keeps asking more
than 75 mandatory questions since this may be a sign of a
low performance level.  Although, this does not necessarily
mean that the candidate is failing the overall examination.
The 2007 NCLEX-RN® test plan considers the following
four main and eight subcategories of client needs in which
exam candidates need to prove minimum competency:

    I. Safe Effective Care Environment
  • Management of Care
  • Safety and infection Control
    II. Health Promotion and Maintenance
    III.Psychosocial Integrity
    IV. Physiological Integrity
  • Basic Care and Comfort
  • Pharmacological and Parenteral
    Therapies
  • Reduction of Risk Potential
  • Physiological Adaptation

No one who successfully graduated from a Nursing College
will really depend on any “tricks" or "techniques" to pass
the NCLEX - RN ® Exam. This exam is not incalculable but
nursing graduates need to realize that it requires a very
different and thoughtful way of preparation in comparison
to the exams at the nursing college. The challenge of the
appropriate preparation is to review the nursing course
curriculum under exam relevant aspects and to get familiar
with the specific requirements and question style of the
NCLEX ® - examination. A lot of preparation and review
courses promise easy success by offering "original" exam
questions although the NCSBN does not publish or sell the
exam questions!  Another approach suggests to analyze
the question  style to find the right answer but does not
provide the review of the relevant content.
Dr. Karrenberg's NCLEX-RN® Tutorial and Review live
courses provide you with an exam oriented, high quality
live tutorial as well as an unique and detailed study book
that you will not find in any store.  It summarizes the most
high scoring content of the NCLEX-RN® test plan.  This
course focuses on the presentation of profound and in
depth knowledge in order to satisfy the requirements of the
latest NCLEX-RN® test plan issued in April 2007.

This depends on what type of learner you are.  A tutorial
can define and filter exam relevant content which makes
your studying more targeted, economical and success
oriented.
A tutorial also helps you to improve the weak areas in your
knowledge more efficiently. Furthermore, the presentation
of the relevant subject materials in a classroom setting
reinforces the learning effect by audiovisual participation.
Since the newest NCLEX-RN® Test plan is now requesting
a much more detailed knowledge, a tutorial will help you to
refresh these details when you need them.
